Is VLC still legit?

I’ve been wondering about this video player called VLC is still legit. My friend told me it’s really good for watching movies and shows, but I want to make sure it’s still a safe and reliable option. Can you tell me if VLC is still a trustworthy program to use? I don’t want to download anything sketchy or risky on my computer. Is it a legit video player that won’t cause any problems or viruses?
